Fundraising for non-profit organizations and educational programs is an important and vital endeavor. There are a variety of ways to raise funds, such as selling products or hosting special events. Individuals become involved in these types of activities for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s to support a personal cause or community need, while for others it’s to be more involved with their school and show school spirit.

Fundraising Activities and Events

A recent survey showed that 71% of parents sold school fundraising products to their friends, family, and co-workers. Many Millennials, however, often choose to raise funds by participating in activities rather than engaging in product sales. Given the total number of Millennials that participated in the survey, 64% stated that they preferred fundraising events that involved walking, running, and cycling.

Causera.org, which is a software company that works with non-profit organizations, released a survey this year. The results showed that 98% of the participating parents stated their children’s schools held fundraising events or activities. It’s interesting to note that these were a frequent occurrence for 40% of the schools.

Elementary school parents, students, and volunteers have contributed to making 73% of overall fundraising sales. On average, a single fundraiser can generate over $3,100.00 for schools and non-profit organizations. When fundraising emails are sent out, this can also be beneficial for non-profits. For every 1,000 emails, a non-profit organization can raise $17.00.

The Role of Principals in Developing School Spirit

School principals tend to be dedicated to developing school spirit because they realize how it contributes to higher scholastic achievement along with other important benefits. A survey showed that 89% of the participating principals believed in the importance of their personal role in creating and contributing to the development of school spirit. One of the ways that they accomplish this task is through participating in and hosting fundraising events and activities.

According to a 2007 survey from the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the number of fundraisers held by schools at that time varied. While 76% of the schools held five or fewer fundraisers every year, 20% held five to ten. The survey also revealed that 64% of the schools would stop holding fundraisers if they weren’t in need of the financial supplements. Unfortunately, less funding is provided to many of the country’s schools than prior to the Great Recession. There are a minimum of 34 states, for example, that provided less per-student funding for the 2013 to 2014 school year than in previous years.

How Parents, Students, and Communities Can Become Involved

There are a variety of ways that parents, students, and the communities within which they live can make a positive contribution to education. When these individuals participate in school clothing fundraising and attend campus and community events, this makes an impact on overall school spirit.

It’s important to note that almost $1.4 billion is raised every year through product fundraising efforts alone. This makes it possible for children to attend field trips and have athletic team uniforms. These funds also make it possible for students to have campus computer labs, playground equipment, and other important materials and supplies. School clubs, which encourage participation, benefit from school clothing fundraising as well.

The Role of Social Media in Fundraising Endeavors

When social media users share that they’ve taken action by making a donation or otherwise becoming involved, it often inspires others to do so as well. Furthermore, when people interact with nonprofits on social media, 55% have been inspired to take some type of action, according to a recent survey.
